As part of the responsibilities of volunteers to reach out to schools and make an impact, YAH visited Amrahia Community School on 6 th August 2022. With a total of 12 volunteers, we reached out to about 80 students. It was educative and fun as we used one of the stories on the Ananse the Teacher App – Why children cry for nothing. Ananse The Teacher App is a gamified learning app that uses folklore (set on the hero of African folklore – Ananse, the African Spiderman) and games for knowledge and skills transfer. Also, it has Science, Technology, Arts and Maths, (STEAM) practical lessons linked to the stories that makes learning engaging and fun.  The story of Why children cry for nothing was linked to surface tension experiment using everyday materials around us (a takeaway pack, scissors, toothpick, liquid soap, bowl of water). Students had fun and were determined to give it a try at home.

Volunteers of YAH meet for a yearly camp to reach out extensively, interact, evaluate and strategize for the year ahead. This year’s camp, ‘ Fall Camp’ was held in Koforidua from the 25 th of September to 2 nd October. A total of 15 volunteers reached out to 80 students in two schools, Okorase Methodist A and Little Flower School. A module from our Ananse at Home Modules – specially curated teaching and learning modules, based on our Ananse The Teacher App was used during the one week period. The student undertook a baseline to ascertain their knowledge on the topic before they were taught. The topics were later introduced (Materials and Energy) with practical experiments to make learning fun and easy to recall. Students wrote a post test at the end of the week to establish the effect of the module on their performance and how well they understood what was taught. There was a 100% increase in posttest signifying how well the students understood and enjoyed the sessions.

Volunteers have always been our most cherished resources. YAH has a team of enthusiastic volunteers, who aid in carrying out our activities. These volunteers are drawn from volunteer bases in the University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC), All Nations University Colleges (ANUC), Koforidua Technical University (KTU), BlueCrest University, MEST, GIMPA and various institutions across the country.

As the world celebrates women in the month of March, an opportunity is presented to take a critical look at equality and opportunities for women worldwide. International Women’s Day this year carries the theme “ Choose to challenge ” , which is appropriate given the challenging circumstances covid-19 has presented. The theme further expounds that a challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change.
